SAFE AND SOUND PROTOCOL
Helping the nervous system feel safe
The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is a research-informed listening program that uses specially filtered music to gently help the nervous system shift out of fight-or-flight and into a calmer, more connected state. We offer SSP for both children and adults, individually and in small groups.
How it works
Listening that speaks to the body
Developed by Dr. Stephen Porges and grounded in Polyvagal Theory, SSP uses music filtered to emphasize the frequencies of the human voice. Listening to it, paced and supported by a licensed psychologist, invites the nervous system to notice cues of safety.
When we feel safe, it becomes easier to focus, connect with others, manage big feelings and recover from stress. Because nervous systems regulate in connection with others, a calmer parent also helps create a calmer home.
Who it may help
Children, teens and adults experiencing
- Anxiety, worry or feeling constantly on edge
- Sensitivity to sound and other sensory input
- Difficulty with attention and emotional regulation
- Stress, overwhelm or the lasting effects of difficult experiences
- Challenges with social connection and engagement
SSP is used alongside a full plan of care, not as a stand-alone cure. We'll talk through whether it's a good fit during your intake.

THE SCIENCE
Three ideas from Polyvagal Theory
Hierarchy
Our nervous system moves between states: calm and connected, mobilized for fight-or-flight, or shut down. We can shift between them, or feel a blend, throughout the day.
Neuroception
Below conscious awareness, the body constantly scans inside, around and between us and other people, deciding whether a situation is safe or threatening.
Co-regulation
We are wired to regulate together. Calm, attuned connection with another person helps our own nervous system settle, which is why we support SSP so closely.
